5.6 Venezuela Earthquake

http://www.digitalnewsreport.net/images01/2010/01_january/15/20100115_venezuela_earthquake.jpg5.6 magnitude earthquake hit Venezuela today at about 1:30 PM in local time. USGS (U.S. Geological Survey) to estimate the center of the range epicenter 235 miles east of Caracas.

Venezuela lies on the same Caribbean oceanic tectonic plate that Haiti lies on (see image). The USGS says this quake was centered at 10.421°N, 63.495°W at a depth of 7.3 miles (11.7 km).

Although the power has been disrupted, there are no reports of damage or injuries. Local officials are working to restore power.

CarĂºpano, a major city near the quake, has a population of 122,195. The city is about 20 miles away.
