Mariah Carey Acceptance Speech VIDEO

2010 Palm Springs International Film Festival Awards Gala - Red CarpetPlease forgive me because I am a little bit…” was the beginning of Mariah Carey’s acceptance speech at California’s Palm Springs International Film Festival, but she never got to finish that sentence, although she continued talking for an additional seven minutes.

She was awarded for best breakthrough performance for her role as a social worker in “Precious.” Festival organizers said that she was nervous about giving her speech because she was not used to talking in front of such distinguished actors such as Sean Penn, Morgan Freeman, Jeff Bridges, Clint Eastwood, and Dame Helen Mirren.

“I have always wanted to be doing independent films, but people were always like ‘You will take us out of the movie by overshadowing her character,’” Carey said in an interview with PEOPLE, “I don’t think so. I think I will be able to go into the character, but it takes a real genius to understand that.”

The director of “Precious,” Lee Daniels, was the one who presented Carey with the award. “Mariah Carey was born with stiletto heels on her feet. During the first day of work, I had to teach her how to walk with regular shoes,” Daniels said
