New Year's Day Brings Rose Bowl Parade and Game

The first day of the new year brings the 121st Tournament of Roses Parade (ABC, NBC, HGTV, Univision, RFD TV, 11 a.m.), the colorful event in Pasadena which may play on more networks than any other march down the street.

This one is different, though: Its floats are all made of flowers or organic material, the colors and detail especially pop on HD.

It all leads to the Rose Bowl (ABC, 5 p.m.) pitting Oregon vs. Ohio State, one of a handful of bowl games that also include Northwestern vs. Auburn in the Outback Bowl (ESPN, 11 a.m.), Penn State vs LSU in the Capital One Bowl (ABC, 1 p.m.), West VIrginia vs. Florida State in the Gator Bowl (CBS, 1 p.m.) and Florida vs. Cincinnati in the Sugar Bowl (Fox, 8:30 p.m.).
The unique sporting event today, though, is the NHL Winter Classic (NBC, 1 p.m.), the one time the league moves a game outdoors as in the old days, this time pitting the Flyers at Bruins in a frozen Fenway Park.

What better day to take in the movie "2010" (TCM, 9 p.m.), the lesser known sequel to "2001" released in 1984 with Roy Schieder, John Lithgow and Keir Dullea. It accompanies two other movies about the near future, "Fahrenheit 451" (TCM, 10 p.m.), released in 1966 (though a remake is planned for release in 2012), AND 1975's "Rollerball" (TCM, midnight), with James Caan, which supposedly takes place in 2018.

Julie Andrews hosts the Vienna Philharmonic kicking off the New Year on "Great Performances" (WGBY, Channel 57, 9 p.m.).

Get a load of the new show from "Design Star" winner Antonio ballatore in March when "The Antionio Treatment" (HGTV, 1 p.m.) gets a New Year's Day preview.

Also, the new series "The Outdoor Room with Jamie Durie" (HGTV, 10 p.m.) does wonders to a backyard deck, turning it into a full sized Balinese water feature.

Returning from a food show for his first love, ice, is the "Brian Boitano Skating Spectacular" (NBC, 4 p.m.).

Back for a new season of rescuing canines is "Dogtown" (National Geographic, 10 p.m.).

The new series "The Squeeze" (MSNBC, 10 p.m.) follows some self-satisfied cops who try to cultivate sources in prison.
