Mary Weiland was the wife of Scott Weiland, frontman for the 1990s grunge band Stone Temple Pilots. I’ll never forget their song “Interstate Love Song” for many reasons I won’t mention here.
Mary Forsberg Weiland recently wrote about her time with Scott and the band in her memoir, “Fall to Pieces: A Memoir of Drugs, Rock ‘n’ Roll, and Mental Illness.” Mary, a divorced former model, wrote the book with Larkin Warren, former Esquire editor.
Seems Scott and Mary lived up to the band name by getting stoned all the time. Both were strung out on heroin. Mary recalls a time they both shot up so much they had to wear long sleeved shirts to hide the needle marks when they attended a Fourth of July party thrown by Leonardo DiCaprio at his Malibu home.
I was reminded of a scene from the movie “Waiting to Exhale” when I read what Mary did in March, 2007. Seems she dragged Scott’s wardrobe into their driveway and set it on fire. She landed in a mental hospital with a diagnosis of bi-polar disorder for her actions. (I don’t remember that happening in the movie.)
Mary said about the torching experience, “The bonfire was huge and very pretty. Everything went up in smoke quickly, except the shoe leather; the Guccis took the longest. The news reports said I’d torched $10,000 worth of Scott’s clothes, which was wrong by a factor of eight. He was somewhat insulted at their estimate: ‘Eighty thousand dollars, Mary,’ he said later.”
Mary was just 16 when she entered into a life of sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll that included heroin and crack. Scott Weiland is credited with the breakup of the band because of his wild behavior.
Mary’s memoir hit the market on November 10 if you want to read more. It’s sad to think these guys were so stoned when they sang some of my favorite songs.
