Earthquake strikes Baja California

A magnitude-5.9 earthquake about 22 miles southeast of Calexico was widely felt today in the San Diego area and southern Riverside County.

At the downtown City Hall building in San Diego, occupants felt about 30 seconds of sustained shaking as lights swayed and the building could be heard creaking.

The shaking was also felt in Temecula, including the four-story Tower Plaza building near the intersection of Rancho California and Ynez roads. Some occupants of the building said the structure shook for 30 to 45 seconds. Authorities in Southwest Riverside County have not reported any serious problems.

Sgt Dennis Gutierrez, spokesman for the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, said the earthquake was felt in the desert area of the eastern part of the county, but no reports of problems.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries resulting from the temblor, which struck at 10:48 a.m.

The epicenter of the quake was 23 miles southeast of Calexico, according to the Caltech Seismological Laboratory.
