Sheila Dixon resigns as part of plea bargain

http://www.msa.md.gov/msa/mdmanual/36loc/bcity/leg/images/1198-1-1588b.jpgThe news coming forth is that if Maryland Mayor Sheila Dixon resigns she will reach a plea bargain on her criminal charges for embezzling gift cards intended for the needy. The plea would include Sheila Dixon keeping her pension worth more than $80,000 a year, and would give her four years of probation, at the least.

As part of the deal, Dixon will have to pay $45,000 to a charity and perform community service. Dixon has also agreed she won’t seek office in the city or state, and will resign effective February 4, 2010, according to The Baltimore Sun.

Dixon was indicted back on January 9, 2009 for twelve counts including perjury, theft and misconduct. She allegedly misappropriated gift cards which were intended to be given to the poor. A jury returned a guilty verdict just last month for a misdemeanor count of fraudulent misappropriation.

Per the Maryland State Constitution, City Council President Stephanie Rawlings-Blake will be the replacement effective when Sheila Dixon resigns.
